Carrying on from the preceding chapter, we are now immersed within the next instalment that is Jumanji: The Next Level. And what a linear level this is. After the overall outline, and outcome, of the interesting first period we are succumb to a rather dislodged affair of what, at best, can only be described as a Kentucky Derby of low standard, puerile and noticeably immature game to catapult this embarrassing farce; To enthral is target audience that, as seen, has now dropped to a lower age of understanding that this witless wonder is demeaning of any sense of wit and imagination. This is not merely poor execution of script, at its very core, it is at a level that does not hold its audience in any regard for its art; lazy is too cliché at best, this is a level of the lowest form of direction and experience in film.
Once more, we have all the four friends of the previous quest cantering along in the frolics of a new adventure; a new game and fresh locations and each being mixed and stirred with avatars that are based on, and around, their last gathering, at least.
It is in this new gathering that we see the dreary four and we bear witness to a small group of friends, who lacking in chemistry, charisma and charm, produces simply too little screen presence here to fill the audience with delight and wonder; it's all a tedious affair, even to the point of adding new faces to the game, Messer's Awkwafina, Glover and DeVito, and their respective personalities' cannot pull this from the quagmire of its astonishingly dull script and poor lacklustre avatar building disaster. There simply is no true aura, no honest connection amongst this new mindset between the players; What was once had is now, regrettably, misplaced and removed. Age has most certainly refused to gather pace but placed a regression of personality and having receded into childlike banter and juvenile charade. Already, by the second level, this has promptly turned into self-parody.

I just got out of Jumanji: Next Level
The wait for the movie to start wasn't as long as Motherless Brooklyn, but it was still longer than normal, 15 minutes of adverts, before 4 trailers then annoyingly, even more adverts! Including what's usually the last one saying put your phone away! But this time there was another 4 after it!
I tend to slate Dwayne Johnson for playing himself in everything, and his movies being forgettable, but it was certainly entertaining to watch Dwayne Johnson impersonate Danny DeVito and Kevin Hart do his best Danny Glover impression! This is probably more favourite performance by Kevin Hart, cos he wasn't being Kevin Hart! That was the best thing about the movie for me. I was surprised to see Awkwafina is in this, I'm rapidly becoming a fan of hers, after The Farewell
I doubt i'll feel the need to rewatch it, but for the most part, I enjoyed it and laughed a few times, but something happens about an hour in, and then from there it just got a bit flat for me!
There were too many people in my screening to count, an 11am Wednesday showing) so I expect it to gross a billion

Words cannot express how much I admire this film. It is exceptional. The acting, direction and cinematography are all perfect. To me, the film's most significant accomplishment is the director's ability to convey this tragic yet strangely triumphant story without a shred of indulgent sentimentality. This makes it all the more profound and a truly spiritual experience.

This time, I feel he's reached a 'style over substance' moment that can't be overlooked. The story of a conscientious objector during WWII is certainly a workable topic. But this movie seems determined to be another ethereal art piece that's sort of a movie. The narrative is kept simple, not reaching the soulful depths i was expecting. The cinematography is fine but it's not life-changing. I mean, the location is really the star, and the angles and shots are merely relaying a background of beauty; in other words, filming in the Bavarian Alps you tend to get a lot of breathtaking shots. So what you end up getting is three hours of overindulgence in movie-making, and not a satisfying experience. I think Malick's deepest fan base will like it, but objectively, I don't see the greatness in this film, but perhaps great material to debate in a college classroom.

The new mutants film. T he X-Men horror The New Mutants has had quite the mutated journey to the screen: several scrapped release dates, abandoned reshoots, a new character who never materialized, issues around colorism in casting, and finally, a corporate acquisition that nearly shelved the project altogether. Now that the dust has settled, a release date has been firmly set for 3 April and this week, a new trailer launched, does the final product have any hopes of being any good? Back in October 2017, everything seemed on track when Fox released the first trailer online. After 10 films, X-Men fatigue was settling in, but The New Mutants was pitched as something different. Not only would it be the first scary movie in the universe but it would introduce a host of never-before-seen-on-screen characters – Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), Sunspot (Henry Zaga), and Danielle Moonstar, AKA Mirage (Blu Hunt) – and trap them in a haunted asylum, a juicy prospect that was enough to pique interest. The director Josh Boone pitched the story, based on the Demon Bear arc by the writer Chris Claremont and the relatively avant-garde artist Bill Sienkiewicz, as the start of a trilogy, one that would later introduce characters like Karma and Warlock. The movie was scheduled for release on 13 April 2018. But by January, the cracks started to show. The film was pushed way back to February 2019 and then to August 2019 to make space for Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix, respectively. Per the Tracking Board, the studio wanted the film reworked to be even scarier, to capitalize on the new horror wave started by Get Out and It. By February 2018, the Hollywood Reporter claimed that The New Mutants was undergoing an additional round of photography, and would include a new character – changes that appear now to have never occurred. Boone told Creative Screenwriting that navigating the politics of studio film-making was “ its own special beast ” that led to a “constantly morphing” script (that was repeatedly “torn apart and put together” by four other scriptwriters and a six-person writers room). Tracking Board said Boone felt “a bit neutered” by Fox, as the company couldn’t decide if it wanted New Mutants to be a YA drama or an all-out splatterfest. Disney acquired Fox in March 2019, and New Mutants got lost in the shuffle until Boone re-emerged in December 2019 to confirm Disney would be releasing the film as originally shot. Boone finally seems to have regained creative control of his project, but elsewhere the film stumbled under the studio’s direction in more profound ways. Fans noted that both the casting of Alice Braga as Dr Cecilia Reyes and Henry Zaga as Sunspot erased their identities as Afro-Latinx characters and perpetuated issues of colorism – already oft spoken about in regard to Storm. Comparing character redesigns and colorings across comic book runs can be fraught, but canonically all three have been portrayed as darker-skinned in their earliest incarnations. This seems like an unfortunate misstep that goes against the nature of the story itself, as Stan Lee told the Guardian in 2000 that the X-Men were a direct metaphor “for what was happening with the civil rights movement”. (“Let’s lay it right on the line, ” Lee wrote in the comics in 1968. “Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. ”) So what’s to be done? Can The New Mutants climb out of this pyre to become, if not the most progressive, at least a passably good comic book film? Considerable baggage aside, one angle to consider is the potential novelty of the story: unlike the world-ending stakes that comic book films often shoehorn in, the Demon Bear saga has a focused scope. In the comics, the demonic bear that killed Dani’s parents stalks and nearly kills her, and when the bear comes to finish the job, the New Mutants throw down in a hospital. It’s a horror story that is, at its core, about the importance of friendship, family and the ties that bind – and aren’t the best horror tales often about that? With rumors that New Mutants will feature a romance between Dani and Wolfsbane, it’s easy to see how Boone (who directed The Fault in Our Stars) could ground a more nightmare-inducing adaptation in a tale of young love. Does that make The New Mutants automatically good? Not necessarily, but it’d mark the film as more unique than the vast majority of city-leveling X-Men films, and put it more in line with standalones like Logan and Deadpool. A rather thorny issue with the X-Men films as a whole is how poorly they’ve juggled their vast stable of characters, focusing primarily on the same white, often male, leads. While the original 2000 X-Men had a unique, gritty, indie quality to it – terrified loner Rogue meets gruff father figure Wolverine – the subsequent films got lost in the sauce, repeatedly centering Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, and then to a lesser extent, Jean and Mystique, to the detriment of literally everyone else in the X-verse. Rogue’s powers went mostly unexplored; Jubilee is never named on camera; the omega-level Darwin was easily killed; Kitty Pryde’s comic book role was handed to Wolverine in Days of Future Past; Storm and Emma Frost were underutilized; the list goes on. To put it frankly, the core X-Men films suffered from a profound lack of imagination, and though they’re ensembles, not a single one of their 12 films can boast a character of color as the primary lead. Isn’t it disappointing that the franchise that was built on the importance of being different was too afraid to be different itself? This is what The New Mutants, warts and all, has going for it: Blu Hunt’s Dani Moonstar is the first Native American to lead a comic book film, a fact that’s gotten buried in all the scheduling conflicts and reshooting drama. Though Hunt’s casting also fueled some concerns of colorism, it remains a notable leap forward. There’s an opportunity – a hope – that Boone and the other writers on the film also fixed the problems of the original Demon Bear story (Dani turns into a damsel in distress, and the Demon Bear inexplicably turns two white characters into Native Americans) and let Dani be the true lead in her own tale. That the sun will set on this entire Fox franchise right as the studio landed on Dani as a lead feels particularly tragic. Despite being fantastical tales of aliens, monsters, superhumans and robots, nearly all comic book films have issues around primarily favoring the stories of white characters, and/or casting light-skinned or white-passing actors. The New Mutants, at the very least, foregrounds an indigenous woman of color, who literally wrestles with her heritage and legacy, all while developing a newfound family at Xavier’s school. It stands a good chance of being a fun one-off film, but the brass tacks of it all is that Dani Moonstar deserved better, as all the X-Men of color deserved better. Hopefully Disney will see the value in Dani’s story and keep her around, or at least greenlight future X-Men projects focused on lesser-seen characters from the get-go. If Disney ends up rebooting with Professor X and Magneto again, while pushing off all the characters of color until a third phase (a la Black Panther), The New Mutants will forever be remembered as a landmark casting, but also a tragic example of too little, too late.

Just who are the New Mutants, and what makes them so new? Reader, read on. What is The New Mutants? The New Mutants is the next installment of 20 Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, and it’ll hit theaters on April 13, 2018. Its being billed as a tonal crossover between John Hughes and Steven King: Five teenagers with fantastic powers band together to escape a secret medical facility. Who are the New Mutants? The New Mutants are a group of superheroic, Marvel Comics teenagers, originating in The New Mutants, a 1982 comic series created by Chris Claremont and initially drawn by Bob McLeod. The artist perhaps best associated with giving the series a distinctive look, however, was Bill Sienkiewicz, whose relatively impressionistic linework and painted covers were unusual for superhero comics of the time. The New Mutants was the first X-Men spinoff series ever, in a time when Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men was flying off shelves. Though the X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, they had never really been popular until Claremont restarted the series in 1970 with Giant-Size X-Men #1 ( and a little help from the late Len Wein). Professor X snaps at Roberto de Costa in The New Mutants #1. Chris Claremont, Bob McLeod/Marvel Comics Claremont’s reboot of the X-Men as an international team book, focusing on soap-opera drama and sci-fi adventure, introduced characters like Storm and Nightcrawler to readers and rescued Wolverine from the status of “Guy Who Fought the Hulk that One Time. ” The X-Men were suddenly so popular that Marvel editorial insisted that he pen a spinoff series. Since Claremont’s X-Men were largely adults, compared to Lee and Kirby’s superpowered teens, The New Mutants would be about a new class of kids growing up under the training of Professor X. And like Claremont’s X-Men, it would feature a broad cast of different nationalities and plenty of new female characters. And they wouldn’t be out doing superhero hijinks, at least not by design, although in practice they got into plenty of trouble — in alternate dimensions, the Amazon rainforest and against a rival mutant school run by Emma Frost. Is The New Mutants a part of the X-Men Cinematic Universe? Yes! But like Deadpool and Logan, it may not have direct ties to other films — like the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix. It doesn’t sound like the kids are going to be hanging out in the Xavier School much. Which New Mutants are in the movie? The cast of The New Mutants cast is very similar to the core cast of the New Mutants in their early comics incarnation, consisting of Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot and Mirage. Magik, played by Anya Taylor-Joy ( The Witch), is Illyana Rasputin, sister of the X-Men’s Colossus. She has a suite of powers deriving from a combination of her mutation and a talent for sorcery. Her core mutant ability is that she can open portals to a dimension known as Limbo, and, from Limbo, open a portal to anywhere (or anywhen) in Earth’s dimension, making her a powerful teleporter. Her magical talents manifest most famously in her Soulsword, which disrupts magic instead of cutting physical objects. Wolfsbane, or Rahne Sinclair, played by Game of Thrones ’ Maisie Williams, is a Scottish girl raised by religious fundamentalists to believe that her mutation — the ability to transform into a wolf form with enhanced senses and reflexes — reflects her inherent sinfulness. Sienkiewicz’s rendition of Wolfsbane transforming, from The New Mutants #19. Bill Sienkiewicz/Marvel Comics Cannonball, a. k. a. Sam Guthrie, played by Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers on Stranger Things), is a nice boy from a big Kentucky family who can propel himself forward at high speeds. While doing so, he appears to be made of rocket exhaust (or a “blast”) from the waist down. While blasting, he is nigh invulnerable. Sunspot, or Roberto de Costa, played by Henry Zaga ( Teen Wolf), is a rich kid from Brazil who can absorb and channel solar power. When he uses his powers, he takes on a void-like appearance, his dark silhouette surrounded by, well, spots. And finally, Mirage, known as Danielle Moonstar and played by Blu Hunt, is a Native American girl who has the ability to psionically project people’s fears or desires as realistic illusions. Mirage discovers the living quarters of the X-Men in The New Mutants #1. Joining all these teenagers is Cecilia Reyes, an obscure mutant character — she’s a doctor who can create protective forcefields. She will be played Alice Braga ( I Am Legend). As far as we know, there will be no mutant characters from the other X-Men films appearing in The New Mutants, like Professor X or Wolverine. Who is making The New Mutants? The New Mutants is written by Josh Boone and Knate Lee, and Boone is also directing. The pair are childhood friends — and childhood fans of The New Mutants series. Boone is already familiar with teen-focused tales from directing The Fault in Our Stars and pitched an entire New Mutants-based trilogy of films to X-Men films producer Simon Kinberg. “I was raised by very religious parents, ” Boone told Entertainment Weekly in May. “They were Evangelical Southern Baptists and they believed in the rapture; they believed the devil was real; they believed in demons. Knate grew up in a similar environment and our entire lives we sort of hung on to each other as tight as we could. That’s how we got through the craziness we grew up in. ” The Demon Bear Between the two friends, he says, they fixated on two obsessions: Stephen King and Marvel Comics, and it seems like they’re incorporating the spirit of both into The New Mutants. So, wait, was The New Mutants a horror comic? Not really... but it was often a lot more spooky and mystic than the political, soap-opera-y space adventures that the X-Men were having at the time. Also, it looks a lot like The New Mutants movie will draw from “The Demon Bear Saga, ” a story that ran in The New Mutants #18-20 in 1984. It’s considered to be one of the series’ most iconic storylines. In it, the New Mutants become locked in a physical and psychic battle with an evil force that takes the form of a huge animal: a Demon Bear that murdered Mirage’s family and seeks to kill her as well. “The Demon Bear Saga” was Bill Sienkiewicz’s debut on The New Mutants, and his style steeps an already ghostly story in jagged, dark visuals. His Demon Bear is often depicted simply as fanged teeth, crazed eyes and two massive sets of claws, floating in darkness. The reader is left to imagine how truly huge it must be in the light. There was no sign of a bear in last night’s trailer, sure, but there were plenty of weird visions and one notable ball of flame inside a washing machine. But to find out whether Boone and Lee can really pull off a superheroic horror story, we’ll have to wait until next April.
